Scholarly societies exist through and for their members. Among other activities, the International Herder Society organizes a conference on topics of interest to Herder (and more generally, eighteenth-century) scholars from different disciplines every two years to facilitate international and interdisciplinary exchange. The conference 2004 took place in Saarbrücken, the conference 2006 in Madison, the conference 2008 in Jena and the next conference will proceed at the university of Notre Dame, Indiana in 2010.

Membership in the International Herder Society does include a number of benefits:

• the biannual newsletter, with up-to-date information on Herder-related activities, calls for papers and information on conferences, and the latest bibliographic entries.

• email communication among members via a member email list: announcements, projects, working groups.

• the biennial Herder Yearbook. Each volume offers a number of interesting articles, as well as a comprehensive Herder bibliography.

The International Herder Society welcomes new members. Anyone with an interest in Herder and related areas ist encouraged to join. Annual due rates (payable at January) are 30$ (reduced for students, emeriti and independent scholars: 15$) or 40$ for sponsors.
